![]() When it comes to wire nuts, you need to know two things-the wire nut color code and wire nut sizes.Įach of the colors, namely gray, blue, orange, yellow, and red, and the different sizes are intended to handle different amounts of gauge sizes and wire types. In this article, we’ll tell you exactly how to read these wire nut sizes charts, how to properly connect them, and answer any other related questions. If you don’t have much experience working with wire nuts, you can use a wire nut size chart.Īll you have to do is review both the size (or gauge) and number of cables you are working on and then cross-reference these to the correct wire nut sizes.Īccessing a wire nut size chart is one thing, but using the right nut for the job is crucial. There are a variety of types and sizes, and equipping yourself with the correct ones can lead to a lot of guess-work. These handy connectors are also called winged wire nuts, twist-on-connectors, and Marettes. Wire nuts connect electric cables for in-home, commercial, and industrial wiring. This is where wire nuts come in and can help keep you straight. You usually can’t afford to make mistakes when working on an electrical project. And on top of that, getting them to STAY together security is a must. It’s easy to join the wrong wires together for one thing. One to plug the stove into and the other to plug the control box into (after I upgrade it to 240v).Connecting electrical wires can be a little tricky, I get it. So I want to build a box that will plug into the stove outlet and then have 2 outlets. But then I figured I would just forgo the switch and make sure not to turn the oven/burners on when i'm brewing. The reason i'm using 8 gauge wire is to keep with the 40 amp rating of the circuit and I am going to build it to control 2 elements that might sometimes be running at the same time 16 amp x 2.Īt first I was thinking about making a switch box that would plug into the stove outlet and then provide 2 other outlets with switches. I don't want to have to unplug and replug the stove everytime I brew. The only 240v outlet that's close to water I have is the oven (40amps), i'm in a 1 bed apartment and can't install another outlet. I made the decision to upgrade to a 240v element that should pull about 16 amps (3750 watts). Also that wattage wasn't really enough to boil the 7 or so gallons as vigorously as homebrewing beer requires with darker beers. ![]() I could have solved this with a fan but then I thought maybe the breaker in the box might overheat and flip. This worked but it turns out it was pulling 19.7 amps from a 20 amp circuit and the internal breaker was overheating after about 3 hours of use and flipping. I built a PID control box shown here and used a 120v (2250 watt) heating element. ![]() I am a homebrew that went electric (swapped from propane).
